Hrain Update (writing a tie-in novel in a month)

This is just a quick status update. In my last post, I mentioned that I was trying to write a tie-in novel in a month about my character Hrain. Well, I’m 15 days in, and the story stands at 6  chapters complete and 21,000 words. Based on my original outline, this should be half-way there, since I was targeting a short novel of 40,000 words / 10 chapters.

The problem is, I’ve only written about three chapters worth of plot events when comparing to my original outline. So, at this rate it’s shaping up to be more like an 80,000 word long story. I feel that would be a bit weird, since Sagitta itself is only a bit over 80,000 words.

One thing I’ve noticed about writing with an outline is that I stuck to it initially, but then the characters start to take shape and the next thing I know, they are driving the plot in a different direction. I feel like this is OK, and I can adjust the outline accordingly. It just means the story I’m going to get out of this is not the one I originally plotted out.

Hopefully, this one is better!

The goal remains. Finish this beast by the end of February…to get there, I’m going to have to step it up to something like 3000 words a day. Can I do it? We’ll see…
